A Small Test With Big Science Behind It
At Tomorrow’s Wellness Center (TWC), handgrip strength is more than a number. It provides a simple, objective window into muscle health, physical function and longevity.
In the landmark PURE study of nearly 140,000 adults, each 5 kg decrease in grip strength was associated with a 16% higher risk of death from any cause and a 17% higher risk of cardiovascular death. Grip strength was a stronger predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure in that study.¹
A later systematic review encompassing more than 3.1 million people also found strong evidence linking lower handgrip strength with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.²
Your grip does not determine how long you will live. It can, however, serve as a remarkably simple marker of overall physical reserve and how well your body is aging.
Muscle Mass Is Only Half the Story
You can have adequate muscle mass and still be functionally weak.
InBody 580 → Measures muscle mass, body fat, visceral fat, segmental lean mass and other important body-composition metrics.
InBody InGrip → Measures what that muscle can actually do.
This distinction matters. The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People identifies low muscle strength as the primary characteristic of sarcopenia and specifically recommends grip strength as a clinical measure.³
Part of the TWC AIR Rx℠ Method
Handgrip strength fits naturally into the TWC AIR Rx℠ Approach to Healthy Aging.
| ASSESS | InBody 580 → Body Composition InGrip → Muscle Strength PNOĒ → VO₂ Max & Cardiorespiratory Fitness |
| INTERVENE | Use objective findings to help individualize exercise, nutrition, metabolic health, weight management and healthy-aging strategies. |
| REFINE | Repeat key measurements over time to determine what is improving and where further optimization may be needed. |
Assess Intelligently. Intervene Precisely. Refine Continuously.
Make Healthy Aging Measurable
Healthy aging isn’t simply about adding years to your life. It is about maintaining the strength, fitness and resilience to live those years well.
At TWC, the TWC AIR Rx℠ Approach helps transform healthy aging from an aspiration into something we can measure, track and refine over time.
